Made in Portugal

Why we make British kitchens in Portugal

Lower overhead, no showroom, nobody in the middle. The honest explanation, and the questions people are usually too polite to ask.

Our kitchens are drawn in the United Kingdom and built by hand in a workshop in Porto. They cost less than an equivalent British-made kitchen, and the reason is overhead rather than quality. That answer tends to raise more questions than it settles, so here are the rest of them.

How we found the workshop

Slowly, and in person. We visited a number of workshops, drank a great deal of coffee, and watched people work. The one we chose was founded in 1962 and has fourteen cabinetmakers on a 3,200m² floor. Several of them learned the trade from their fathers.

Portugal has been making furniture for British homes for two centuries. This is not a new idea, and it is not an experiment.

Why it costs less

Three things, none of them to do with the kitchen itself.

  • Workshop overhead is lower in northern Portugal than in the South East of England. Floor space, energy and rates all cost less.
  • We have no high-street showroom. A showroom on a London high street is a very expensive way to display cabinets, and the cost of it sits inside every kitchen that company sells.
  • We sell direct. There is nobody between the workshop and you.

Same European oak. Same SuperPan carcass. Same Blum runners and hinges. Same hand-finishing. The savings come from the business model, not the bill of materials.

The questions people are too polite to ask

Is it lower quality because it is cheaper?

No, and we would rather you pushed us on this than quietly assumed it. The specification is published, the hardware is named, and you are welcome to inspect a sample before committing.

What if something goes wrong in year four?

Our own installation team come back. There is a 25-year guarantee behind it and a UK-registered company you can look up and hold to it. You are not chasing a workshop in another country.

How does it get here?

Fully assembled, in custom crates, on our own consignment. Not flat-packed, not couriered, not handed to a pallet network.

Will I be billed for duty later?

No. Everything is landed, cleared and delivered at the price we quote. There is no second invoice.

What you actually get from it

A signature. Every Nata kitchen is signed inside the carcass by the cabinetmaker who built it. That is not a marketing detail, it is how the workshop has always worked, and it is the part we would not want to give up.
